Seminaries

Accredited online seminaries

ATS-accredited seminaries offering MDiv and MA degrees at a distance — compared on tuition, residency requirements, and total degree cost.

Online seminary stopped being a compromise in 2020, when the Association of Theological Schools began approving fully online Master of Divinity degrees. Today the largest divinity enrollments in the country are distance programs, and an ATS-accredited online MDiv is the same credential as the residential one.

Two things still separate good options from bad ones: accreditation and residency. Verify ATS accreditation, then get the residency requirement in writing — that pair determines both whether your degree counts and whether you can actually finish it while working.

What an online MDiv actually costs

A standard MDiv is 72 to 88 credit hours. At the rates above, that produces a wide spread in total tuition:

  • $21,000–$26,000 — Midwestern or Southeastern at the SBC rate, or Liberty's online divinity rate. These are the cheapest accredited paths to an MDiv in the country.
  • $32,000–$42,000 — Grace, Bethel, Western, United, Regent, and RTS Global.
  • $45,000–$56,000 — Asbury, Dallas, and Fuller before institutional aid, which is often substantial.

Add technology fees, books at roughly $600 to $900 per year, and travel for any required intensives. Our online college cost guide breaks down the full budget, and cheapest online Bible schools covers undergraduate options.

Fully online versus hybrid

No campus requirement: Midwestern, Liberty, Grace, Regent, and RTS Global run MDiv pathways you can complete entirely at a distance.

Short intensives: Asbury, Fuller, Western, Bethel, and United require limited on-campus time — usually a week per year — for formation, cohort building, or preaching labs. Many students find this the best of both, but it is a real travel cost worth budgeting.

Verifying an online seminary before you enroll

  1. Check ATS membership directly at ats.edu rather than trusting the school's own claim, and confirm the specific degree is approved for online delivery.
  2. Confirm regional accreditation and Title IV eligibility in the US Department of Education's DAPIP database. No Title IV, no federal loans.
  3. Ask your ordaining body in writing whether the specific school and format satisfy its requirements.
  4. Get the residency requirement in writing from admissions, including any preaching or formation intensives late in the program.

Our accreditation guide explains the difference between ATS, ABHE, TRACS, and unrecognized accreditors — and why the last group can cost you an ordination.

Frequently asked questions

Is an online seminary degree respected?
If the school is accredited by the Association of Theological Schools, yes. ATS began approving fully online MDiv degrees in 2020, and an ATS-accredited online MDiv carries the same institutional standing as the residential version — the diploma typically does not distinguish delivery mode. Ordaining bodies overwhelmingly ask about accreditation, not format. Unaccredited online seminaries are a different matter and are widely rejected.
How much does an online seminary cost?
Roughly $295 to $700 per credit hour in 2025–26. A 72-hour MDiv therefore runs about $21,000 at Midwestern's SBC rate, about $22,000 at Liberty, roughly $32,000 at Grace, and $45,000 to $50,000 at Fuller or Dallas. Online students also avoid relocation, campus housing, and most fees, which often saves more than the tuition difference between two schools.
Can you become a pastor with an online seminary degree?
In most denominations, yes. Ordination normally requires an accredited MDiv plus examinations, a supervised internship or residency, and denominational polity coursework. The MDiv can generally be earned online; the internship and examinations cannot. A handful of bodies — some Presbyterian presbyteries and most Anglican and Catholic formation programs — still require substantial residential formation. Ask your credentialing body first.
Do online seminaries require any campus visits?
It depends on the school. Midwestern, Liberty, Grace, Regent, and RTS Global offer MDiv pathways with no required campus time. Asbury, Fuller, Gordon-Conwell, and many Methodist schools require one or two short intensives — typically a week on campus per year. Confirm the residency requirement in writing before enrolling; it is the single most common surprise for distance students.
Is financial aid available for online seminary?
Yes. Any Title IV–eligible seminary can award federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans and Grad PLUS to online students on the same terms as residential ones — file the FAFSA. Federal Pell Grants do not apply to graduate study. Denominational subsidies such as the SBC rate and the UMC Ministerial Education Fund generally apply to online students too. See our FAFSA guide for the details.
How long does an online MDiv take?
A 72- to 88-hour MDiv takes three years full time and typically four to six years part time, which is how most online students enroll while working in ministry. Schools on 8-week terms, such as Liberty, let motivated students move faster. Transferring in credits from an accredited bachelor's in Bible or a graduate certificate can shorten the path by a semester or more.
