Methodist and Wesleyan seminaries

United Methodist, Global Methodist, Nazarene, and Free Methodist graduate schools — compared on tuition, University Senate approval, aid, and online availability.

Methodist theological education splits into two very different economic models. University-based divinity schools — Duke, Candler, Perkins, Boston — carry high published tuition and large endowments that fund most Methodist ordination candidates at a steep discount. Free-standing seminaries like Asbury, Nazarene Theological, and Wesley Biblical charge roughly half the sticker price but award less institutional aid.

Layered on top is the denominational realignment of 2022 onward. UMC candidates need University Senate approval; Global Methodist candidates follow a separate approved list. Confirm your pathway with the credentialing body before you apply anywhere.

Asbury: the Wesleyan flagship

Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky is the largest seminary in the Wesleyan tradition and, unusually, is independent rather than denominationally owned. That independence is precisely why it has become the default choice for evangelical Wesleyans across the UMC, the Global Methodist Church, the Free Methodist Church, and the Wesleyan Church. It maintains a second campus in Orlando and one of the largest accredited online seminary programs in the country.

The university divinity schools

Duke Divinity School and Candler School of Theology at Emory are the two best-resourced Methodist schools. Both list tuition above $1,000 per credit and both routinely fund Methodist candidates at 50% to 100%. Candler's aid is particularly deep. Perkins at SMU adds distinguished Hispanic and urban ministry programs, and Boston University School of Theology is the oldest UMC seminary in the country, where Martin Luther King Jr. earned his doctorate.

If you are considering these schools, do not screen them out on published tuition. Apply, get the aid letter, and compare net cost against the free-standing schools — the ranking frequently reverses.

Free-standing UMC seminaries

Garrett-Evangelical (Evanston), Wesley Theological Seminary (Washington DC), United Theological Seminary (Dayton), Iliff (Denver), and Saint Paul School of Theology (Kansas and Oklahoma) span the theological range within Methodism, from Iliff's progressive orientation to United's renewal and church-planting emphasis. United and Saint Paul are the most flexible for working pastors, with substantially hybrid delivery.

Holiness and Wesleyan denominations

Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City is the denominational seminary of the Church of the Nazarene. Wesley Biblical Seminary in Mississippi holds a conservative Wesleyan-holiness position and has become a major Global Methodist pipeline. Northeastern Seminary at Roberts Wesleyan carries Free Methodist heritage with a broadly interdenominational student body.

Funding a Methodist seminary degree

  1. Get certified as a candidate early. Ministerial Education Fund scholarships flow through your annual conference Board of Ordained Ministry, and certification is usually a prerequisite.
  2. Apply to at least one university divinity school. Their aid packages regularly beat lower-sticker schools outright.
  3. Ask about local church and district support. Many congregations underwrite a share of tuition for candidates they are sponsoring.
  4. Check UMC General Board of Higher Education and Ministry scholarships at gbhem.org, which administers dozens of named awards annually.

Frequently asked questions

Which seminaries are approved for United Methodist ordination?
The UMC University Senate maintains the official list of approved schools. The thirteen UMC-owned seminaries — including Duke, Candler, Perkins, Boston University, Garrett-Evangelical, Wesley, United, Iliff, Saint Paul, Claremont, Drew, Gammon, and Methodist Theological School in Ohio — are all approved, and the Senate also approves a number of non-UMC ATS schools including Asbury. Always verify current status with your Board of Ordained Ministry before enrolling.
Is Asbury Theological Seminary Methodist?
Asbury is Wesleyan in theology but independent in governance — it is not owned by the United Methodist Church. It is nevertheless approved by the UMC University Senate, and it is the largest Wesleyan-tradition seminary in the world. It has become the primary training ground for the Global Methodist Church and for evangelical Wesleyans across denominations.
How much does Methodist seminary cost?
The range is wide. University-based divinity schools such as Duke, Candler, Perkins, and Boston list roughly $1,000 to $1,100 per credit, but all four fund Methodist ordination candidates heavily — Duke and Candler commonly cover 50% to 100% of tuition for qualifying students, so published rates badly overstate actual cost. Free-standing schools like Wesley Biblical, Nazarene Theological, and United run $480 to $600 per credit with lighter aid.
What is the Ministerial Education Fund?
The Ministerial Education Fund is a UMC apportionment that subsidizes theological education. A portion goes directly to the thirteen UMC seminaries, and annual conferences distribute the remainder as scholarships to their own certified candidates. If you are a UMC candidate, contact your annual conference Board of Ordained Ministry early — MEF support is often the single largest reduction in your net cost.
Where do Global Methodist Church candidates study?
The Global Methodist Church, formed in 2022, has not built its own seminaries. Its candidates most often attend Asbury Theological Seminary, Wesley Biblical Seminary, United Theological Seminary, or Truett. The GMC publishes its own list of approved institutions, which differs from the UMC University Senate list, so confirm with the denomination directly.
Can I do a Methodist MDiv online?
Yes. United Theological Seminary, Saint Paul School of Theology, and Wesley Theological Seminary all deliver substantially hybrid or online MDiv programs, and Asbury has one of the largest accredited online seminary enrollments in the country. Duke and Candler remain primarily residential. Note that most annual conferences still require some in-person formation and a supervised residency.
