Non-denominational schools trade denominational subsidy and a guaranteed placement pipeline for independence and breadth. In practice that means two things: their tuition is set by the market rather than by a convention, and their graduates work across a wider range of churches than denominational graduates do.
It also means the doctrinal range inside this category is enormous — Dallas Theological Seminary and Gordon-Conwell are both "non-denominational" and disagree substantially. Read the statement of faith.

The classic Bible institutes
Moody Bible Institute is the reference point for the whole category. A large endowment keeps published tuition near $12,000 — roughly a quarter of comparable private colleges — and its Chicago location supplies unusually strong urban ministry placements. See our Illinois guide for the surrounding cluster.
Columbia International University, Multnomah University, Lancaster Bible College and Ozark Christian College follow the same institute model at regional scale, all accredited, all under $30,000, all with heavy required Bible cores.
Evangelical liberal arts
Wheaton College is the most selective evangelical college in the country and functions as a genuine liberal arts institution with a Christian core. Biola University requires 30 credits of Bible from every undergraduate regardless of major — effectively a free Bible minor — and its Talbot School of Theology handles graduate work. Both are expensive at sticker price and discount aggressively; see our financial aid guide.
Independent seminaries
Dallas Theological Seminary is the historic center of dispensational theology and expository preaching. Gordon-Conwell is broader and more academically eclectic. Trinity Evangelical Divinity School carries the strongest research faculty of the three. Grace Theological Seminary is the value pick at roughly $11,000 per year.
Online at scale
Liberty University operates the largest online divinity program in the United States, with per-credit pricing around $400 and rolling eight-week terms. It is accredited by SACSCOC, which makes it genuinely transferable — the main criticism is class size and faculty contact, not credential validity. How to choose
- Read the doctrinal statement carefully. "Non-denominational" spans dispensational, Reformed-leaning, Wesleyan-leaning and broadly evangelical positions.
- Ask about ordination support. Without a denominational pipeline, placement depends on the school's alumni network and your own initiative.
- Prefer regional accreditation if there is any chance you will pursue graduate work outside theology.
- Compare net price, not sticker. The spread between Moody and Wheaton narrows considerably after aid.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the best non-denominational Bible college?
- Moody Bible Institute offers the strongest combination of reputation and price, with tuition near $12,000 thanks to a large endowment subsidy. Wheaton College is the most academically selective, Biola the largest with a required Bible minor for every undergraduate, and Dallas Theological Seminary the best known at graduate level. Liberty University dominates online enrollment.
- Are non-denominational Bible colleges accredited?
- The major ones hold both regional and specialized accreditation — Moody through HLC and ABHE, Biola and Talbot through WSCUC and ATS, Gordon-Conwell through NECHE and ATS. Because these schools have no denomination underwriting them, regional accreditation matters more for their credibility, and most pursue it aggressively.
- Do non-denominational Bible college credits transfer more easily?
- Generally yes. Independent evangelical colleges tend to carry more general education credit and more often hold regional accreditation, both of which improve transferability. Credits from a regionally accredited school like Wheaton, Biola or Moody move about as freely as credits from any private university.
- Can a non-denominational degree get you ordained?
- It can, but the ordaining body decides. Independent and non-denominational churches ordain directly and readily accept these degrees. Confessional denominations — PCA, OPC, LCMS, Episcopal — usually require additional confessional coursework or examinations on top of an MDiv from an interdenominational school.
- Is Moody Bible Institute still tuition-free?
- No. Moody's historic full tuition subsidy for undergraduates on the Chicago campus ended in 2017. It remains one of the least expensive accredited Bible colleges in the country, with published tuition well below comparable private institutions and substantial endowment-funded aid on top.
