Mississippi punches far above its size in theological education. Reformed Theological Seminary was founded in Jackson and still trains Presbyterian pastors for the whole country from there; Wesley Biblical Seminary has become the conservative Wesleyan world's growth story. Around them sit Baptist universities with some of the lowest tuition in America and historically Black colleges central to the Southern church.
This guide covers 12 Bible colleges, seminaries, and Christian universities with theology and ministry programs in Mississippi — with location, accreditation, degree levels, denominational ties, online availability, and tuition where publicly available.
How this guide is organized
Mississippi's Bible schools sort into four groups:
Baptist universities — Mississippi College, William Carey, and Blue Mountain Christian, all tied to the Mississippi Baptist Convention, plus Southeastern Baptist College in the BMA tradition.
Reformed institutions — Reformed Theological Seminary's founding campus and Belhaven University, both in Jackson.
Wesleyan and Methodist — Wesley Biblical Seminary in Ridgeland and Millsaps College in Jackson.
Historically Black colleges — Rust and Tougaloo, both central to Black church leadership in the Mid-South.
Mississippi also has many association-run ministry institutes awarding certificates rather than degrees. Read our accreditation guide before enrolling anywhere that does not appear in a federal accreditation database.
Bible colleges and Christian universities in Mississippi (undergraduate)
Mississippi is one of the least expensive states in the country for private Christian higher education. Several universities here publish tuition below $25,000 — figures that would be impossible on either coast — and state grants frequently close most of the remaining gap for residents.

Mississippi region by region
Jackson metro
Jackson is the theological center of the state and, for Reformed Christianity, of much of the South. RTS, Belhaven, Wesley Biblical in Ridgeland, Mississippi College in Clinton, Millsaps, and Tougaloo all sit within about twenty miles of each other. A student can complete an undergraduate Bible degree and an ATS M.Div. without ever changing cities.
South Mississippi and the Gulf Coast
William Carey University in Hattiesburg anchors the south, with a second campus at Tradition on the coast, and Southeastern Baptist College serves Laurel and the surrounding counties. Coast churches also draw on New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary an hour and a half away.
North Mississippi and the Delta
Blue Mountain Christian University serves the northeastern hills and Rust College the Holly Springs area. The Delta has no residential Bible college, so students there generally commute to Blue Mountain or study online through Mississippi College, William Carey, or RTS Global.
ATS accreditation. The Association of Theological Schools accredits Reformed Theological Seminary and Wesley Biblical Seminary. ATS status is expected for military chaplaincy endorsement and most doctoral admission.
ABHE accreditation. The Association for Biblical Higher Education accredits Southeastern Baptist College. It is federally recognized so Title IV aid flows, but ask specifically about credit transfer to SACSCOC institutions.
The theological gap between Mississippi's schools is real. RTS requires confessional subscription to the Westminster Standards and is the intellectual home of the conservative Presbyterian world. Wesley Biblical is classically Wesleyan-Arminian and explicitly traditionalist on Methodist doctrinal questions. Mississippi Baptist Convention schools follow the Baptist Faith and Message. Millsaps, Tougaloo, and Rust sit in mainline and historically Black traditions with far broader theological range. Read the doctrinal statement in full and confirm your denomination recognizes the school for ordination.
3. Format and life stage
Traditional undergraduate: Mississippi College, Belhaven, William Carey, Blue Mountain Christian, Millsaps.
Reformed ordinands: RTS Jackson residentially or RTS Global online.
Working adults: Belhaven's adult studies division is the most developed in the state.
Cost and financial aid for Mississippi Bible students
Every accredited school in this guide participates in federal student aid. Start with the FAFSA for Pell Grants and federal loans, then check the Mississippi Tuition Assistance Grant (MTAG), the Mississippi Eminent Scholars Grant for high-achieving students, and the HELP Grant, which can cover full tuition for qualifying lower-income residents at eligible institutions. Because Mississippi's published tuition is already among the lowest in the nation, these programs can reduce net cost dramatically.
Two things are worth knowing. First, the HELP Grant has strict income and course-load requirements and must be applied for early — students who miss the deadline lose it entirely. Second, denominational scholarships from the Mississippi Baptist Convention, the PCA, and the Global Methodist Church meaningfully reduce seminary cost for sponsored candidates, so ask your denominational office before assuming published per-credit rates apply to you.
Mississippi College in Clinton is the state's largest Christian university and its Baptist flagship. Belhaven University in Jackson offers strong Reformed biblical studies, and William Carey University in Hattiesburg trains Baptist ministers and missionaries through its Cooper School. For graduate study, Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson is nationally significant.
Does Mississippi have a seminary?
Yes, two of national importance. Reformed Theological Seminary was founded in Jackson in 1966 and remains the flagship campus of what is now a multi-campus Reformed institution. Wesley Biblical Seminary in Ridgeland is a leading conservative Wesleyan-holiness seminary and has grown rapidly as Methodists realigned. Southeastern Baptist College in Laurel adds a small ABHE-accredited Baptist option.
Is Reformed Theological Seminary in Mississippi?
Yes — RTS began in Jackson, Mississippi in 1966 and the Jackson campus remains one of its principal locations, offering the M.Div., M.A. degrees, and doctoral work. RTS has since added campuses in Charlotte, Orlando, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Washington D.C., and New York, plus RTS Global for online study, but Jackson is the original.
Can I use Mississippi state grants at a Bible college?
Yes. The Mississippi Tuition Assistance Grant (MTAG) and Mississippi Eminent Scholars Grant (MESG) are available to residents attending eligible in-state institutions, including private Christian universities like Mississippi College, Belhaven, William Carey, Millsaps, and Blue Mountain Christian. The HELP Grant serves lower-income students and can cover full tuition at eligible schools. All are administered by the Mississippi Office of Student Financial Aid and begin with the FAFSA.
What is the cheapest Bible college in Mississippi?
Southeastern Baptist College in Laurel publishes the lowest tuition of any accredited Bible college in the state. Among universities, Blue Mountain Christian University and William Carey hold some of the lowest published rates in the Southeast, and the Mississippi HELP Grant can cover full tuition for qualifying lower-income residents.
Are there online Bible degrees from Mississippi schools?
Yes. RTS Global delivers accredited online Reformed theology degrees from the Jackson-founded institution, Wesley Biblical Seminary offers online and hybrid Wesleyan graduate degrees, and Mississippi College, William Carey, and Belhaven all run online Christian studies or ministry coursework for working adults.
What denominations are strongest in Mississippi Bible schools?
Southern Baptists dominate — Mississippi College, William Carey, Blue Mountain Christian, and Southeastern Baptist College all come from that tradition. Presbyterians are the second force, with RTS and Belhaven anchoring a Reformed presence disproportionate to the state's size. Methodists support Millsaps and, in the conservative Wesleyan stream, Wesley Biblical Seminary.
How much does Bible school cost in Mississippi?
Mississippi's Christian universities publish undergraduate tuition roughly $12,000–$27,000 before aid, among the lowest in the United States. Combined with MTAG, MESG, and the HELP Grant, net cost for in-state residents is frequently minimal. Seminary tuition at RTS and Wesley Biblical is priced per credit with substantial denominational scholarships.
Tuition figures reflect official school publications and published rates as of mid-2026 and are subject to change. Always confirm current costs, program availability, and accreditation status on each school's official website before applying.
