The Doctor of Ministry is the professional doctorate for people already in ministry. It is designed to be completed part-time while you keep pastoring, and it culminates in an applied research project rooted in your own congregation or context rather than a purely academic dissertation.

Admission requirements
- An M.Div. or equivalent. Most programs require a 72-credit master's; some accept a shorter M.A. plus bridge coursework.
- Three or more years of ministry experience after that degree.
- Current ministry context. The research project has to happen somewhere, so active service is usually required for the duration.
- References from a supervisor, elder board, or denominational official.
- A written statement describing the ministry problem you want to research.
How much residency should you expect?
ATS standards expect cohort interaction, so "online D.Min." usually means online coursework with an annual gathering of three to ten days. Liberty is the notable fully-online exception. Before you commit, ask three questions: how many days per year on campus, whether the residencies are consecutive, and whether any are international — travel is often the largest hidden cost of a low-residency doctorate.
D.Min. vs. PhD vs. Ed.D.
- D.Min. — professional, applied, part-time, 30–36 credits, project-based. For practitioners.
- PhD / ThD — research, full-time, language exams, 4–6 years, dissertation. For teaching faculty.
- Ed.D. in Christian education or leadership — professional doctorate focused on organizational and educational leadership rather than pastoral practice.
If your goal is a seminary teaching post, a D.Min. rarely substitutes for a research doctorate. If your goal is deeper competence in preaching, leadership, counseling, or missional strategy while you keep serving, the D.Min. is the right instrument. Paying for it
- Church continuing education budgets. Many congregations fund a portion of a pastor's doctorate; ask before you apply.
- Denominational grants. SBC, Wesleyan, Nazarene, and PCA bodies all offer pastoral study aid.
