MDiv vs MA in Theology: Which Should You Pick?
MDiv is the standard ordination degree; MA is faster and cheaper. Here's how to choose.

The core difference
The Master of Divinity (MDiv) is a 72–90 credit professional degree designed for ordained ministry. It covers biblical languages, theology, church history, pastoral care, and supervised ministry practice.
The MA in Theology / MTS / MAR is a 48–60 credit academic degree. Faster and cheaper, but usually not sufficient by itself for ordination in mainline or conservative denominations.
Pick MDiv if
- You're headed toward ordination in a denomination that requires it (most do).
- You want board-certified chaplaincy (usually MDiv + CPE).
- You expect to lead a congregation.
Pick MA if
- You want theological education for lay leadership, teaching, or writing.
- You plan to pursue a PhD and want a research-track MA/MTS/ThM.
- Cost or time is a hard constraint and ordination isn't your goal.
Can you upgrade later?
Yes — most seminaries let MA graduates apply MA credits toward an MDiv, typically shaving 24–36 credits off the MDiv.
