In 2026 a theology degree costs roughly $4,500 to $38,000 per year in tuition, depending on level, school type, and format. Online and denominationally subsidized programs sit at the low end; residential private universities sit at the high end. Almost nobody pays sticker price.

What drives the price

• School type. A denominational seminary with a large endowment can charge a third of what an independent Christian university charges for the same MDiv.
• Format. Online per-credit rates are usually 20–40% below residential rates, and they remove room, board, and relocation entirely. See online Bible college cost.
• Accreditation. ATS and regionally accredited programs cost more than unaccredited institutes — but they are the ones that qualify for federal aid and transfer. Read the accreditation guide before you trade cost for recognition.
• Residency. Most Bible colleges are private and charge one rate regardless of state, so in-state discounts rarely apply. State grants sometimes do.
• Credit load. An MDiv is typically 72–90 credits; an MA is 48–60. That difference alone is often $20,000.

Cost by degree level, in detail

Associate degrees

Two-year Bible and ministry associates are the cheapest accredited entry point, commonly $8,000–$14,000 a year at ABHE colleges. Many students use one to test a call before committing to a bachelor's.

Bachelor's degrees

Published undergraduate tuition at Christian universities ranges from about $12,000 to $42,000 a year. Institutional grants typically cut 30–60% off the published rate, so ask every school for a net-price estimate rather than comparing sticker prices. Master's degrees

Seminary tuition is priced per credit almost everywhere. Expect $500–$900 a credit, less at denominationally subsidized schools. An MA at 48 credits and $600 a credit is roughly $28,800 total; an MDiv at 84 credits is roughly $50,400.

Doctoral degrees

A DMin is usually a fixed cohort price of $25,000–$40,000 spread over three to five years while you keep working. Research doctorates are a different economy: strong PhD programs fund tuition and pay a stipend, and an unfunded PhD is rarely worth the debt.

Denominational discounts can halve the bill

This is the single biggest lever most students miss.

• Southern Baptist seminaries discount tuition heavily — often 50% or more — for members of cooperating SBC churches.
• PCA, Free Methodist, Christian & Missionary Alliance, and Assemblies of God schools all run similar member rates.
• Catholic seminarians sponsored by a diocese or religious order usually have formation costs fully covered.
• Church matching grants are common: your congregation pledges an amount and the school matches it dollar for dollar.

Aid that actually applies

• Pell Grants for undergraduates with demonstrated need — up to roughly $7,400 a year, and it does not have to be repaid.
