How Long Does a Theology Degree Take?
Realistic timelines for finishing each theology degree — full-time and part-time.
5 min read · Published 7/5/2026
Full-time timelines
- Associate: 2 years
- Bachelor's in Theology or Bible: 4 years
- MA in Theology / MTS: 2 years
- Master of Divinity (MDiv): 3 years
- Doctor of Ministry (DMin): 3–5 years (cohort-based, part-time by design)
- PhD / ThD: 4–6 years after an MDiv or MA
Part-time and online realities
Most seminary students study part-time. A 3-year MDiv typically takes 5–7 years part-time. Online programs are usually structured for part-time completion.
Speeding it up
- Take summer courses.
- Test out of intro Bible/theology (CLEP, CBE).
- Transfer MA credits into an MDiv (usually saves 24–36 credits).
- Choose a 2-year MA over an MDiv when ordination doesn't require it.
Slowing it down (on purpose)
Formation takes time. A slower, part-time pace with real church involvement often produces better ministry preparation than a rushed full-time schedule.
