Christian colleges in New York

Evangelical, Catholic, mainline, and Orthodox — New York offers a wider theological range than any other state, from an Adirondack Bible institute to Morningside Heights.

New York's Christian higher education is unusually varied. Within a few hours' drive you can find a Wesleyan liberal arts college in a rural valley, an urban multi-ethnic Bible college, the flagship Episcopal and progressive mainline seminaries, a Jesuit research university, and the leading English-language Orthodox seminary in North America.

The state has also seen real turbulence — at least two well-known Christian institutions have closed or suspended operations in recent years — so verify a school's current status before applying anywhere.

Undergraduate options

Nyack College is the most distinctive: a Christian and Missionary Alliance school with campuses in Rockland County and New York City, and one of the most ethnically diverse student bodies in Christian higher education. Houghton University offers a traditional residential Wesleyan liberal arts experience in Western New York, and Roberts Wesleyan near Rochester adds adult-completion and graduate ministry programs through Northeastern Seminary.

Word of Life Bible Institute in Schroon Lake is a different category — one- and two-year ABHE-accredited intensive Bible training rather than a four-year degree, often used as a gap year before transferring.

Graduate theology and seminaries

New York City holds a remarkable concentration of ATS-accredited seminaries. Union Theological Seminary is the historic center of progressive Protestant theology and funds large scholarship packages; General Theological Seminary is the Episcopal Church's oldest; St. Vladimir's in Yonkers serves the Orthodox world; and St. Joseph's Seminary (Dunwoodie) trains priests for the archdiocese. Upstate, Colgate Rochester Crozer carries a deep American Baptist and Black church leadership tradition.
