SACSCOC Accreditation for Bible Colleges and Seminaries

SACSCOC is the regional accreditor covering eleven Southern states and Texas — the densest region in the country for Bible colleges and seminaries. If you are looking at a Christian school anywhere from Virginia to Texas, SACSCOC is likely the agency behind its institutional accreditation.

Why regional accreditation carries the most weight

Regional accreditation is the credential public universities, state licensure boards, and employers recognize without asking follow-up questions. A SACSCOC-accredited bachelor's degree in biblical studies transfers, satisfies graduate school prerequisites, and qualifies for every federal aid program — no case-by-case negotiation required.

For Bible colleges specifically, regional accreditation signals that the school met standards written for all of higher education, not only for theological institutions. That is a harder bar in some respects, and it is why dual ABHE-plus-SACSCOC accreditation is a genuinely strong credential.

Christian schools in the SACSCOC region

The SACSCOC footprint includes Baylor and its Truett Seminary, Dallas Theological Seminary, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Criswell College, Liberty University, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and Boyce College, Reformed Theological Seminary, Asbury University, Toccoa Falls College, Point University, and Columbia International University, among many others.

Note the pattern at the seminary level: nearly every major Southern seminary holds SACSCOC for the institution and ATS for its graduate theological degrees. Seeing both is the expected configuration, not redundancy.

Verifying SACSCOC accreditation

Search the school in the SACSCOC membership directory. Confirm the membership level, the highest degree level approved, and whether the school currently carries any sanction such as warning or probation. Sanctions are public, and they are worth asking the admissions office about directly rather than assuming the worst.

Frequently asked questions

Which states does SACSCOC cover?

Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia, plus certain institutions operating internationally.

Is SACSCOC better than ABHE for a Bible college?

It is more portable. SACSCOC credits transfer more predictably and are recognized by state licensure boards that sometimes specify regional accreditation. ABHE better validates the biblical studies core. A school holding both is the strongest combination.

Do seminaries need SACSCOC if they already have ATS?

Many hold both. ATS accredits the graduate theological degrees; SACSCOC accredits the institution. Holding both broadens recognition for financial aid, transfer, and non-ministry employers.
